That moment in every canner's life....

Remember those guavas from last year?

Well, I am sure I am not the first who has ever canned produce and then a few months later reached into the cupboard and all your hopes and expectations of providing food for your family looks at you from the inside of the jar.

Then there is the moment when you pop the lid and hoping for the best as you use the canned produce...well that was me last night. We all wanted to have gauva crumble and guavas aren't in season, but I have 6 bottles of them in my cupboard.

As I twisted the lid off I was sooooo nervous that there would be mould or something on the top, but was super-pleasantly-surprised to see them in perfect condition. They found their way into a simple pudding:

Blend 250g of butter and 2 Tablespoons of honey.

Add in 1 cup of wholewheat flour and 1 cup of white flour.

Put half of the mixture into the bottom of the bowl. Place guavas on top. Crumble the rest of the dough onto the top of the guavas.

Bake at 180 deg C for 40 minutes. Serve with custard.

I also thought I would share these two pictures. The first is my canning store in the cupboard ( I have a few more jars in the fridge). The cupboard has chillies, guavas, relish, sweet 'n sour sauce and chutney.

The second is my small freezer with beans, corn, pesto, tomato sauce, pumpkin puree and pita breads.

Hi Wendy

I dream of the day that I can freeze some of my home grown produce - need the freezer first.

But I notice that you use plastic bags to store your produce in the freezer. Have you heard of Green Home?(http://www.greenhome.co.za/technicalinfo.html) I would think that freezing in one of their boxes or freezing in a bowl and then wrapping your veggies in GM's greaseproof paper (labelling outside naturally) should work as well? They are very friendly people (I've been in contact with Morgan) - I'm sure he could answer any questions.

I hate plastic and wherever possible I try and avoid it.

Hello Wendy
I love reading your blog. I am so happy your Guava were okay. We are so fortunate to be able to grow and preserve our own produce. In Tasmania at present it is becoming more of a necessity as vegetable prices are increasing so much.

I just love the look of all your canning jars lined up in the cupbard. There's something about preserved food in jars that really appeals to me. Your chillies look so pretty too!

Hi, I'm new to your blog and I'm enjoying it already. I so want to try my hand at gardening; however I do preserve a lot of my store bought produce in the freezer the same way as you have. I cannot find mason canning jars here :( Anyways, look to have fun viewing and learning from your posts.
